Flaunt conventional goal timelines for fun and profit

Conventional thinking is to set “smart” goals which means to draw them out in detail and put timelines on them. The shocking truth is it works even better when you have a general idea of what you want to do and you just go do it.

My late mother Faye’s philosophy was to get up and move forward, not wait for things to just happen. She told me this over and over again, and I watched how she did it with her own life. She taught me how important continual growth was if I wanted to live an empowered life.

I do the same thing now with clients who are taking Equine Connection’s training to become Equine Assisted Certified Facilitators with the business component. They talk to me about going into business “some day” and I do everything I can to empower them to get started now.

I chose to leave two careers and start my own business. I did not wait until I was convinced that the economic times were perfect, that I had all the resources I needed, and that I knew everything I needed to know about the business. I jumped in and learned every day.
I don’t believe we need to wait until we are a certain age to do things in life, nor that any age is too old to start to be empowered in business.

I look at goals differently from most people. I am in favour of having goals, and every once in a while I sit down and consider where I want to go next with my work and my life.
I even write them down because I think there is a unity of thought that comes from committing them to paper and simultaneously embedding them in my subconscious brain.
But I don’t believe in timelines, because if the goal is good and it makes sense, I want to get started today. And every day after that I want to do as much as I can to get myself closer to achieving that goal. It really is as simple as that to me.

I think that way because today is all I have. I do not know what will happen tomorrow. I don’t know if some circumstances will arise that block my path or push me forward.
Since when was it the preferred model of growth to move slowly and inexorably to acknowledge one tiny timeline after another? We are not children on a tiresome journey who need to be told repeatedly how long it will take us to get somewhere where we can have fun.

We are empowered adults, and we can go as fast as we like, every day, to move in the direction of purposeful work and authentic living.

Don’t let your goals become your bosses. Decide what you want to do and empower yourself to get it done. It really is that simple.
