“You have a story that sets you apart from everyone else. People connect to you because of your story. Nobody has it easy in life! It’s how you pull your story together into a cohesive life that defines your empowerment.”
By Kari Fulmek

Your story is the only thing that really sets you apart from everyone else in life.

By your story, I do not mean the actual incidents of life. Many people experience variations of the same life experiences, from love to tragic loss, from success to dismal failure, and from moments of true happiness to devastating sorrow.

We all go through hardships in life. Some are visible for all to see and some are private hurts.

What sets our stories apart is how we respond to life’s experiences.

Being knocked down in life as I was when I lost my beloved mother and four horses in eight weeks is not your real story.

The story that defines your empowerment is what happens in the chapter after you get knocked down.

You can interest people up to a point with your story of sadness and loss and tragedy. But you can inspire them with your story of how you raised yourself back up not just to the level from which you fell, but higher.

Your story is even more than that, however.

There is another chapter after that, and it is the one that defines whether or not you are truly empowered.

That chapter is about how you learned from the incident and the response, and how you used that knowledge to build a better you, a better life, a better business, and to empower others.

When you can reach out and help others discover their personal gift and summon their courage to rise again after tragedy, and empower them to soar past it to new levels of development, then you are not only truly empowered, but you have discovered the true purpose of life.

Our ultimate responsibility on this planet is to empower others as we empower ourselves at every level of our lives.

I discovered these life truths from my own experiences and from my horses who taught me skills and gave me insight I lacked earlier in life.

Horses intuitively know life truths and they react to the stimulus of the participants in their world.

They don’t judge, but they do assess. They don’t talk, but their feedback is communicated honestly and instantly.

Empowerment is about becoming expert at understanding, not guessing. It is about putting your judgment on hold and turning up your listening power.

It is about discerning your intent and acting on it.

The highest form of personal empowerment is empowering yourself to empower others. When you are able to accomplish that, your life will be rich with purpose and energy and at the end of your story, you can lie on your deathbed and say calmly, “that was a good story.”
